UEFA Champions League, third qualifying round

Stade Villeneuve d’Asq, Lille

 LOSC 1 – 1 Qäbälä FK

Frédéric Antonetti (LOSC coach): “We knew that we’re still finding our feet and that it would be tough. I regret the fact that we conceded that goal that came from a combination at a set piece. After that it was end-to-end stuff. The longer the match went on, the better it got for us. I think we deserved to win it as we created a lot of scoring chances. We know we have our chances of qualifying in the return leg. It’s 50-50. We’ll need to get forward to score goals but they can hit us on the counter. There is a chance we can qualify but it will be complicated, as we’ll need to win it.”

Roman Grygorchuk (Qäbälä FK coach): “I’m happy with the result. Anything is possible in the return leg. Lille showed that they are a dynamic side with a lot of pace. But if we can repeat our tactical performance, we can qualify.”

Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, Saint-Etienne

AS Saint-Etienne – AEK Athens FC

Christophe Galtier (AS Saint-Etienne coach): “No-one can say after this first leg whether AEK or ASSE are favourites to qualify; both clubs have their chances. We didn’t concede a goal but when we had the upper hand for a good long while we couldn’t manage to score. Our opponents hadn’t conceded any goals in pre-season matches, so we weren’t surprised by their quality. We knew that it would be a battle over two legs. We hope to qualify in the away game. We have more European experience than they do but I don’t think they will go recklessly all-out in attack in front of their own fans. The two sides will stay balanced and organised, but we don’t need a win in order to qualify. Concerning my side’s attack, I’m not worried that we didn’t score tonight. We’re still in a preparatory phase.”
